With benefits like tax incentives, lower operation costs, positive environmental impact, powerful performance and smooth ride, electric cars are here to stay. In case the advantages of electric vehicles have piqued your curiosity, Baxter Auto has put together some information to give you a clearer picture of what it means to drive electric.
Electric Car Technology
There are two main types of electric autos. All-electric cars, SUVs and pickups run solely on battery power. Extended-range hybrid vehicles generate energy from a battery combined with an internal combustion engine used to extend driving range.
Baxter Auto offers a variety of electric and hybrid makes and models. Our knowledgeable sales consultants can help you decide what best fits your style and needs. This is especially important since the type of electric car you choose will impact driving range, energy usage, charging options and even the amount of tax incentive for which you may be eligible.
Environmental Impact of Electric Cars
Electric vehicles result in considerably lower carbon emissions over their lifetimes than their gas- or diesel-powered counterparts and are an important part of meeting global goals on climate change. In addition, as manufacturers continue using larger batteries with improved driving ranges, battery production emissions will have a greater impact on the climate benefits of electric and hybrid cars, SUVs and pickups.
Cost of Electric Car Operation
Statistics show that electric car expenses are less than 50% of what it costs to operate gas-powered cars. A week of in-home battery charging costs half as much as a week’s worth of gasoline. Plus electric vehicles have fewer moving parts and don’t require fluid changes, tune-ups or frequent maintenance like vehicles with more complex internal combustion engines.

Electric Vehicle Tax Incentives and Rebates
The tax credit for buying an electric vehicle is currently $7,500 but is poised for an increase of up to $12,500 under pending legislation. The amount of tax incentive you qualify for is based on factors such as the make and model of your automobile, its battery size and your income level. Find out more about electric vehicle tax incentives.
Certain states also are ramping up incentives for buying electric. For instance, Colorado offers a Zero Emissions Tax Credit program. In addition, you may be eligible for rebates on new or pre-owned electric cars and/or charging stations. Check with your Baxter Auto dealer and local energy company to see if you qualify for any rebates.
Electric Car Charging Options
Under normal conditions, most of today’s electric automobiles can travel 200-250 miles on a full charge, though that may increase with the advent of more powerful batteries and charging stations. Currently there are three levels of charging stations to help you reach full battery capacity.
- Level 1 wall outlet charging stations for home use are typically included with your electric car purchase. At 100-120 volts, this is the slowest form of charging but provides convenience and enough energy for day-to-day travels.
- Level 2 charging stations are a faster option and can be found in public places across the U.S. Because they require 220-240 volts, Level 2 stations can be installed at home for fast, convenient charges that allow increased driving range.
- Level 3 chargers offer rapid charging at commercial locations but can be more expensive than commercial Level 2 charging stations. However, they are not an option for in-home use because they require a 440-volt DC power supply.
Electric Car, SUV and Pickup Options Keep Growing
As the popularity of electric automobiles grows, so do the number of vehicle choices and charging options. Infrastructure improvements will lead to the addition of more public charging locations in shopping centers, parking garages and workplaces – making the choice of going electric easier with each passing day.
