How Do Electric Car Tax Credits Work in Nebraska?

While many drivers consider the promise of a future tax incentive into the purchase price of their electric vehicle, we wanted to help you find out what you need to know about electric vehicle tax credits more easily.

All-electric and plug-in hybrid cars purchased new in or after 2010 may be eligible for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500. How Do I Get My Electric Vehicle Tax Credit?

When you file your taxes, you’ll be able to claim up to $7,500 in credit against the federal income taxes you owe. You can only claim the electric tax credit during the year in which you purchased your vehicle. If you’re eligible for a tax refund this year, you’ll receive your tax credit alongside the refund.

 Am I Eligible for an Electric Car State Tax Incentive in Nebraska?

While some states do offer additional tax incentives for those who purchase an electric vehicle, Nebraska is not one of them. However, Nebraska does offer other incentives to those who choose to purchase electric vehicles. For example, the Nebraska Public Power District offers residential customers a rebate of $4,500 for purchasing a new EV and the installation of an eligible Level 2 EVSE, or a $500 rebate for installing eligible Level 2 EVSE.

Can I Get an Electric Car Tax Credit on a Used Car?

No. The federal tax credit is only applicable to new car purchases made during the year in which you’re filing.

Can I Get a Tax Credit If I Lease an Electric Vehicle?

You’re only eligible for a tax credit if you buy your electric vehicle.

Which Electric Vehicles Are Eligible for Tax Credits?

Not all electric vehicles sold at Baxter Auto Group will be eligible for a tax credit. Only the first 200,000 electric vehicles each manufacturer makes are eligible. After the first 200,000 vehicles are purchased, the available credit will reduce gradually before eventually expiring.
